280th - "London ...

2009.11.24. 10:55 ZmanUK

... You know: fish, chips, cup 'o tea, bad food, worse weatherMary fucking Poppins... LONDON "

The sentence above is from Avi, one of my favorite character in the movie Snatch. (The actor is fantastic btw)

Anyway, at the weekend, we decided to make a quick appearance in London. A good friend of mine, Mr. Stewart, who is also an ex-colleague from Manchester, was moving to Spain, and therefore leaving the UK. Recently he was relocated to London, Canary Wharf, where eventually he had his contract ended, so he needed to move to greener pastures.

As we could not arrange a meeting in the last 6 months, frankly which was a shame, we decided to got in the car, and visit him at last. The route there was extremely easy, still took us 1 hour 40 minutes drive, because of the distance. His flat almost completely emptied, he was about to move out a couple days after our visit.

We had a great chat at his place, then decided to go for a walk in Greenwich. We went through the walking tunnel under the River Thames, then arrived to the bank, where Cutty Sark was exhibited for years, until the fire. I have seen the pub, Gipsy Moth, where we had some beer with Mr. Sausage in 2007, by that time I lived in Prague and we were coming for a week training.

There is a small market nearby, and as we were very hungry that time, it was 1pm, we decided to have a lunch there. Imagine a place, around 100sqm, packed with stands, and on each stand different food from around the world. Just a quick list: Thai, Italian, South-Brazilian, Nigerian, Ethiopian vegetarian, Japanese... etc, etc.

We agreed to try the Brazilian special BBQ sandwich, filled with perfectly spiced beef. It cost 5.50 however it was so tasty and so huge, that it was enough for the whole day.

After this great sandwich, we chose some sweets, cakes, from the English stand, which were also fantastic.

Having our stomach full, went for a short walk up the hill to visit the Prime Meridian of the world in Greenwich. It is a shame, that I had been in Greenwich at least 10 times, but never visited. So this was the time to make it up :-)

We walked through all the exhibitions, which were great, and on the way down the hill, rain poured down on us. We went back to Mr. Stewart's place and continued our chat.

We left London around 4:30pm, wishing all the best to my friend. I am truly sad, that we were to lousy to organize a meeting much earlier.

There are other people on my list to meet up with in London, yes, Mr. O, you are one of them :-), I do not want to make the same mistake again.

PS: The funny thing I found out, that one of my friend from Secondary School, was also visited London that weekend, also around Greenwich and Canary Wharf :-) We might have seen him, without noticing each other :-) BTW I heard some people talking in Hungarian, but did not really saw them as they were just passing by... :-)
