169th - Another day in the Land of the Free

2009.01.30. 12:05 ZmanUK

Sorry for not writing earlier, but on the last day of my US trip I got cold. This cold got worse, so right now I am sitting at home in bed, after visiting the GP yesterday, with fever, running nose, and pretty bad and irritating caugh. I am planning to go back to work on next monday, because I would like to be back and ready for the unpleasent news to come next week. Unfortunately on some level our job at stake, and not sure if everything will be back to normal. So there are a couple weeks more to suffer not knowing how everything will turn out. Sorry to keep you all in the dark, but I really can not say more.

So, about US. On our second day, training went fine, still 99% of the training material I already knew. Working in Prague gave me very good technical experience on these equipments, and now I was on a position probably once in my life, that I actually KNEW something for sure. :-) (I have to be thankful for Mr. Kiwi, who taught many things for me while I was in Prague. :))

However the training successfully reinforced this knowledge, and put the missing pieces of the puzzle to their place.

So after the training, after a quick change in the hotel, we decided to head out straight, and visit the famous port of Gloucester. Why is it famous? Unfortunately because of a sad reason. There are lots of fishing companies in Gloucester, and most of the people have their only income from fishing. In hundreads of years, many fishermen died at the sea, because of weather conditions. They even made a movie out of one of their story, which happened in 1991. The movie was Perfect Storm, with George Clooney.

And as Gloucester was only about an hour drive from our place, we decided to go for it. I also wanted to see the Atlantic, which was a perfect place to do up north at the port of Gloucester.

Unfortunately we could only leave at 16:00 in it got completely dark at 17:00, just the time, when we arrived to the monument in Gloucester. I was quite disappointed, but did not care too much.

Traffic was quite good on our way, imagine, 3-4 lanes motorways, packed with huge cars. Arriving to Gloucester, we quickly found the Fishermen's Memorial, which was a statue of a Fishermen at the wheel looking over the bay, and out to the Atlantic. I took pictures of the statue, and listened to the deep sound of the waves of the Atlantic.

No matter how dark and cold was, we drove to the east part of Gloucester, drove by Southeast Harbor, and Lighthouse Cove (where we actually stopped and got to the shore in pitch black) way down to the lighthouse. Because of the lack of light, I could only make a very blury image of the lighthouse, but if you have the movie, you can see it in the last minutes. (They mention it as Thatcher Island Lighthouse, but it is not :-))

So finally I could took a picture of a lighthouse on the other side of Atlantic. (The east side of the Atlantic was taken in Scotland if you remember)

After visiting Gloucester we decided to go and visit Ipswich :-). The area's name was New-England, which included 6 states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut), and all the town-cities name was after english towns-villages. Therefore we had Gloucester, we drove by Manchester, and decided to visit Ipswich too :-)

It was not far from us, so we got there soon. Traffic was not soo bad, I really enjoyed driving. Arriving to Ipswich, we could make some pictures about the sign of the town, and also, accidentaly we have found the police station where I could took some pictures about the police cars. We have finished our visit with the town hall, which looked like a theatre.

It was unbelievable good day, especially for me, as I remember, since I saw the movie, Perfect Storm, I always wanted to go and see the area it was shot. The weather could have been better, but I have to tell you, since my childhood, I love snow and cold, and the whole area, snow covered houses, gardens, roads, pavements had a magical sense for me.

Check out the pictures:
