The Weekend was quick and short as usual.
On Saturday we just hanged around, not doing anything. On sunday we went to OpeShaw, to the market.
This was the market where you could buy basically everything for 1-2 pounds. As the weather was great, lots of people was visiting it, and the crowd was quite big. I felt myself as a time traveller, who travelled back to my childhood. I went to the market every weekend when I was a child. In that time in Hungary there was only POLISH market, polish people was selling their stuff in very good prices.
Despite of the fact how many poles live here, this market was dominated by Indians, Pakistanians. The reason we came here was simple, to buy MEAT. At two sides of the marketplace, there were some big trucks. Their side was open, and it was created as a butcher's counter. The counter was at least 1,5 meters above the crowd level. The butcher was wearing microphone set so we could hear him loud and clear. It was a real SHOW.
I remember seeing this method of selling in the Brick Lane Market in London years ago, and this time I was happy that I could fully understand what they said in the microphone.
The method was the following: Sell lots of meat, for 10 or 20 quid. And they really mean a LOT. The guy was standing at the opened counter, and was throwing huge pieces of meat in a bowl on the scale. In the meantime he was shouting to attract us and kept packing the meat in the bowl. When it was a huge pile of meat, he grabbed the bowl and pour it in a bag one of his helper was handing up, than his helper gave it to the closest person who wanted to buy it. You could ask the guy telling him what you wanted, but the funny thing was to see how people reacted watching this ammount of meat is being handed out for a twenty :-) It was incredible.
We have been asked if we were polish, or czech :-), Than got some comments: "Meat for the hungarians" :-)
We spent there a 105 quid, and bought kilos of meats. Mrs. Smith and I have bought chicken breasts, turkey, pork, beef, and spent 40 quid for that alltogether. Now our fridge is full and we are sorted for weeks :-).
And an example: 20£ was for 6,5Kg Chicken Breasts. Do the math. Around 3£/kg? :) After we put everything in the freezer at home, started to clean the flat, as a couple friends were about to come over to play some card game. They came at almost 9pm, then we went for a short walk, as the weather was great.
After the walk, we played a card name, called UNO / SOLO (whichever suits you), till almost midnight. It was great fun for the night. Of course because of the heat I could not sleep well, but don't mind, I will do tonight.
