Where shall I start it? I am not sure if I mentioned or not, but in the last minute my colleage Mr. Brazilian was sent to the states for training too. He could get the same hotel/plane ticket than mine, so I was quite happy.
I was excited when we left Ipswich with a cab and headed to Heathrow. The trip cost 115 GBP, but we were there in a very short time: 1.5 hours Went through security check as usual, and got into a huge plane. Airbus, with 2x4x2 rows of seats. Each seats supplied with LCD screen and a controller we could choose between at least 30 movies, and tv series, and also lots of games. Unfortunately 99% of the movies I have already seen, but anyway, it was good fun.
On our way, we could see the totally frozen New-Foulland, and Nova Scotia from above, it was incredible. We got to Boston in less than 6 hours, and landed on Logan International Aiport.
The aiport is just right at the sea/ocean, so it was a nice view during landing. Getting to the states was quite easy. I had a business Visa, and the officer did not ask many questions, however he stated he might will never be able to go to Budapest :-) which was a pitty for him :-)
Anyway, I got in, we met in the baggage claim with Mr. Brazilian After this, we got out and looked for car rental. A car rental village was not far from the aiport, and each car rental company had their own shuttle operated between the terminals and their office.
We went and rented a car from Avis, which we had company account with. The weather was freezing cold, and there was around 30-40cm snow everywhere, however the roads were nice and clean.
After taking the car, we got our first suprise. While I was putting my stuff into the trunk Mr. Brazilian asked me if I drove automatic transmission car before. Well, I said: I will have to try it. It was strange at the beginning, but in about 10 minutes I got used not to hit the brake with my left leg trying to use it as clutch :-)))) I got used to avoid using my left leg at all, and after this there were no more issues. I have downloaded a US map for my GPS, which I took to the US, so after leaving the car rental in Boston, we could easily found our way up north to the city called Westford.
It was around 50 minutes drive from there on the highway, 4 lanes roads, surrounded by huge american cars/SUVs. It was great. Everything went so easy, and nicely, that the fact I was in the US for the first time, did not touch me almost at all.
We got to the hotel in Westford, which was incredible nice (equal with 5 stars in Hungary for sure). After packing our stuff we went for a dinner to the restaurant nearby. The restaurant was a great place, everything looked like new (also the hotel looked like new.... this will have some meaning in the followings). We ordered burgers, with beer. The waiter was incredible helpful and nice, I heard about the american customer service, but I never experienced how great it was.
The funny thing happened when Mr. Brazilian asked the guy about the drink and drive limit in the US, who answered to us in a lecturing manner: "Well in the USA we call it blood alcohol level" :-)))) Well, I think he might have been suprised to know, that everywhere else they call the same way. But we did not want to be the persons who educate him about that.
Anyway, the food was nice, huge portion, relatively cheap (8 dollars). After this in our time was around 21:00 in the US, but in GMT it was 2.am in the morning. I was terrible tired, so after the dinner we went back to the hotel. The place was really nice, snow everywhere, I felt myself like a child again. I was very happy about it. In the morning I woke up early, called Mrs. Smith over the internet briefly, then I walked up 400 yards to our Headquarters, where the training was held. This hotel was the closest, and it was really nice to walk seeing the huge snow, and big pine trees around me.
The training went fine, our office looked also like brand new. We were there until 3:30 in the afternoon. After the training we jumped in the car, and went to do some shopping for Mr. Brazilian. We visited a shopping center, but apart from making some pictures I did not buy anything. The shopping center looked like a normal english one, however the shop assistants were incredible nice with us. And of course the parking lot looked american with huge cars. They even had a security car, which was going around and checking the cars, looking for any crime to stop. It was interesting.
We went to a lots of shops, Pottery Barn (Friends fans welcomed), Macy's, but comparing the prices I was not very happy about that. Everybody told me how cheap US was, but based on the prices I found the same prices just like in the UK at sale.
Our first real day ended up going home early cause our crazy tiredness because of the jet lag.
Please have a look at the pictures, soon more stories will come.
