337th - Price

2011.01.19. 12:12 ZmanUK

I bought a Bluetooth headset for £15 with delivery from Amazon. Then I checked out of curiosity how much would have cost me if I bought it in Hungary: £23 (and this was the best price)

I wonder WHY? There are thousand of reasons why it is better to live here in the UK. This is one of them. Hungarian minimum wage is around £220, yet many things are more expensive there .... incredible

336th - Cat feed and other stuff

2011.01.19. 11:38 ZmanUK

Today afternoon we have to go and feed our friend's cat. Also another friend of mine just came to the UK for a short visit, so I am gonna have to contact him and find out whether he is gonna make it to visit us over here on the East.

On Saturday we have badminton again, but our attendance depends on my friend's visit. I would love to have them both :)

Yesterday Mrs. Smith went to a Polish hairdresser who did not speak a word in English or any language other than Polish. Mrs. Smith was prepared already with a note written in Polish to let her know how she wanted her hair, however it made me wonder.

This hairdresser was living in the UK over 2-3 years. How the HELL you don't speak ANY English after that time? Don't get me wrong, I have Hungarian friends whose English is disappointing, but still at least they do speak on a very low level. But this lady did not speak any. Disappointing. For me it seems natural if you go to a country, you try to speak at least the bare minimum in their own language.

When we lived in Prague, even though we did not go to language courses, still learnt the basics in Czech, despite of the fact that with speaking English only you could live your life there easily.

Some of my friends makes me angry as well, because there are some of them who technically REFUSE to learn the language. They pretend like they are not living in the UK, therefore no need to speak the language. I never understood this approach, because at least you always have to be prepared for the worst. What if an emergency would require you to speak English? What if your life depends on it? I wouldn't be that stupid to minimize my chance of survival just because I don't want to learn a foreign language.

Also, there are people from Hungary who believe, they can come here and get the same job they did in Hungary, however their English is pretty basic. How the heck do you think you can be accepted for the same high position without speaking the language on a good level? Wake up guys!

3 YEARS!

2011.01.18. 18:00 ZmanUK

Today is my 3rd Year Anniversary in the United Kingdom. It is hard to believe three years has passed since I arrived to Manchester. Let me quickly sum up what happened in the last three years.

- Lived in Manchester

- Lived and currently living in East-Anglia

- Had 3 different jobs (always aim for the best I could say, but no, that is not necessarily true)

- Met great people, had new friends

- Travelled around in the UK, visited "almost" every part of it (this still in progress)

- Joined to the police (not bad considering I was only living here only a bit more than two years when I applied)

Prague where we lived 2 years seems to be a fading memory, however I still remember my great friends I met there, and still keep in touch. (Two of them also came to my wedding :))

I hope this 3 years of stay will not stop here, as we are planning to stay much longer. I think we finally found a place where we could plan ahead and live our lives "peacefully".

335th - Dead

2011.01.15. 22:10 ZmanUK

Played 3 hours of badminton today afternoon. I am now officially dead. Incredible sport, I LOVE it.

Of course doing police duty until 22:30 on Friday and cleaning the flat all morning did not help to get energy before the game :)

Anyway, tomorrow we'll play another hour just to refresh ourselves ...

334th - Never realised ...

2011.01.12. 10:03 ZmanUK

 ... How busy I am.

Since I bought a new phone (Samsung Galaxy S), I set up my google calendar which constantly synchs the mobile's internal calendar. Fantastic how handy this is. I was always struggling to track down my activities, however my previous phone had a calendar as well, it was not easy to manage and synch with the PC, but with this every time I log in from any computer to my google calendar, I can get it updated on my phone.

Anyway, I updated the calendar with all my activities, Police, Kung-fu, Badminton, Friends, Job activities, Meetings, etc, added all the forthcoming training, and now I can find hard to schedule anything else. (Am I a bit overloaded?)

Yesterday I bought a HP printer which has Wireless built-in, so now I am able to print on it from my PC and my two laptops "wirelessly", also my Galaxy S phone can send photos directly from itself to the printer. Great Stuff. And only £31. Fantastic. Of course time will tell how efficient this printer will be in ink consumption.

Our friends who stopped playing badminton a couple months ago seem to "re-join" us again every weekend. So our Badminton team grew much bigger now, every weekend I will have to accommodate 13 people, which is a hard thing to do. For this you would need 3 courts, for 2 hours play each, and so far we did not find a place who could provide all the 3 courts at the same time. So this weekend we will need to split up and play on two courts on Saturday and two courts on Sunday. I believe this will be a true badminton weekend :)

We have heavy rain today ... just when I decided to go out policing for tonight .... Bad luck?
